چکیده

The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of steamheat treatment on the decay resistance of Chinese white poplar and Chinese fir wood against the wood-rotting fungi Gloeophyllum trabeum (Pers.:Fr.) Murrill. The Chinese white poplar and Chinese fir specimens were obtained from Shandong and Hunan provinces, respectively. They were steam-heat-treated at 170, 185, 200, 215, or 230 C with time duration of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hrs in an air-tight chamber that comprised less than 2 per cent oxygen. According to the standard GB/T 13942.192, the decay resistance experiments were completed with the woodrotting fungi G. trabeum on an agar block test with 12-week incubation. The results of steam-heat treatment indicated that, compared to a weight loss of 56% for untreated samples, a weight loss of 45% decreased to just 2% for Chinese white poplar with an increase in temperature from 170 to 230 . No weight loss was observed in the steam-heat-treated China-fir heartwood, sapwood, and untreated sapwood specimens, while only a weight loss of 4.739% in untreated China-fir heartwood specimens was found.

The Effects of Natural Weathering on the Properties of Heat-treated Alder Wood

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of natural weathering in ground contact on biological resistance, modulus of rupture, and color stability of heat-treated alder wood. Chemical composition of weathered wood was also studied by FTIR-ATR spectra. Wood stakes were heated at 150, 180, and 200°C for periods of 2, 6, and 10 hours, and the stakes were subsequently exposed to na...

Utilization of Temperature Kinetics as a Method to Predict Treatment Intensity and Corresponding Treated Wood Quality: Durability and Mechanical Properties of Thermally Modified Wood

Wood heat treatment is an attractive alternative to improve decay resistance of wood species with low natural durability. However, this improvement of durability is realized at the expense of the mechanical resistance. Decay resistance and mechanical properties are strongly correlated to thermal degradation of wood cells wall components. Mass loss resulting from this degradation is a good indic...

Decay Resistance and Physical Properties of Oil Heat Treated Aspen Wood

The decay resistance of oil-heat treated aspen wood (Populus tremula l.) against white rot fungi (Coriolus versicolor) and brown rot fungi (Coniophora puteana) was investigated. Three different temperature stages and two time levels for oil heat treatment for the selection of optimum conditions were determined. Linseed oil as a heating medium was used. The mass loss of treated samples that were...

Influence of Steam Pressure on Chemical Changes of Heat-treated Mongolian Pine Wood

Properties of heat-treated wood have been studied extensively in recent years. However, study on wood that has been treated in pressurized steam is limited, as most wood heat treatments are carried out in atmospheric steam. The main purpose of this study was to explore the influence of steam pressure on chemical changes of heat-treated wood. Wet chemical analysis, elemental analysis, and FTIR a...

Mechanical and Biological Performance of Sodium Metaperiodate-impregnated Plasticized Wood (pw)

Malaysia, especially the Borneo Island state of Sarawak, has a large variety of tropical wood species. In this study, selected raw tropical wood species namely Artocarpus Elasticus, Artocarpus Rigidus, Xylopia spp., Koompassia Malaccensis, and Eugenia spp. were chemically treated with sodium metaperiodate to convert them into plasticized wood (PW). Manufactured plasticized wood samples were cha...
